July/Aug Special Issue on Cloud Computing

Cloud computing has emerged as a dominant paradigm in industry, widely adopted by enterprises. Cloud services are also joining other infrastructures (grids, clusters, and high-performance computing) as viable platforms for scientific exploration and discovery. In CiSE’s July/August special issue on Cloud Computing, guest editors George K. Thiruvathukal (also CiSE’s Editor in Chief) and Manish Parahar of Rutgers discuss how cloud platforms and abstractions can be used to support real-world science and engineering applications, suggesting that many traditional HPC applications can make effective use of cloud services.
